PV INSTALLATION/ADHESION

Who installs the panels and how are the panels adhered to the roof?
The panels are installed by an approved applicator in coordination with our standards. The panels are adhered to roofing membranes with strong adhesive (butyl mastic) on the back of our panels or through other mounting systems designed by our partners.

How much weight do the panels add to the roof?
PowerFLEX laminates are very light weight, 0.7 lbs / ft2 or 3.5 kg / m2.

Are there any penetrations to the roof with the PowerFLEX BIPV system?
No, all of the panels are adhered to the roof with a strong adhesive. This is one of the key advantages over glass modules.

Who does all the wiring and electrical hook ups for the PV system?
A certified electrician/integrator will wire all panels, balance of system equipment, and ties the system to the grid per the electrical code.

What percent of the roof can be covered in photovoltaics?
On average we can cover between 70-75% of the roof with panels since they are installed flat. This leaves available space for roof top units, walk ways, and areas around the roof drains. The system is engineered specifically for your roof.

Can the panels be installed over an existing roof?
Yes, however the roofing material should be clean and in good condition. If not, we recommend to install on a sacrificial sheet such as TPO or to mount it on an a metal plate. These supporting structures can then be installed onto existing roofs using standard roofing practices. This solution allows the laminates to be installed on new, clean, and removable substrate.

MAINTENANCE/INSPECTION

Can the panels be walked on?
PowerFLEX laminates are very tough and can be walked on, however it is not recommended. This is a live power plant on top of the roof and access to your roof should be restricted.

Will the panels work with dust and dirt on them and do they need to be cleaned?
Yes, the panels will still perform with a thin coat of dust or dirt on them. In most countries rain water is sufficient enough to clean the panels, however it is recommended that the panels be cleaned twice a year with a non- solvent soap and water.

How do the panels withstand to ponded water?
PowerFLEX laminates should not be installed on roofs where ponded water is common. Our laminates must be installed on roofs that have verifiable positive drainage according to local roofing standards.

Should the PV system be inspected?
Yes, our recommendation is that the system be inspected twice a year. This could be done by the integrator. The facility manager should look for debris that are obstructing the panels, such as leaves and branches after a large storm. Also, the drains on the roof should be inspected for clogs on a regular basis.

What is the warranty on the solar panels?
The panels are warranted up to 25 years at 80% efficiency depending on the type of application.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM/DESIGN

Can PowerFLEX inverters be connected to any type of inverter?
No, because our voltage temperature coefficients are different than c-Si modules the MPPT range should be from 280-600V. Many commercial inverter manufacturers now have low voltage or “LV” versions available. These low voltage taps are recommended.

Do PowerFLEX laminates work with transformerless inverters?
We are currently performing tests with transformerless inverters. Until we have complete data we do not recommend using transformerless inverters.

What is the typical series string sizing for PowerFLEX laminates?
For 600V systems typically there will be 6 or 7 panels per string and 8-9 panels per string in 1000V systems.

What software programs can be used to forecast kWh production?
We recommend PV Syst for performance simulations.

What connecters are needed?
Tyco SOLARLOK Connectors for 12 AWG are recommended:

  • Male (positive) – Part Number: 1394461-3
  • Female (negative) – Part Number: 1394462-4
