Urs Schoop, Ph.D.

Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Schoop was promoted to Chief Technology Officer in February 2011. He joined Global Solar’s technical staff in 2006 and managed the production and development of thin film coatings. Dr. Schoop helped develop the company’s newly expanded state-of-the-art Tucson, Arizona manufacturing facility, which opened in 2008. Since 2009 he has been the Director of the R&D department, investigating routes to higher cell efficiency, improved long term reliability and more cost effective deposition techniques for CIGS solar cell production.

Prior to joining Global Solar, Dr. Schoop was a Senior Scientist with American Superconductor in Devens, MA where he managed a group of scientists and engineers tasked with scaling up processes and equipment from the R&D stage to production for thin film superconducting wire. Dr. Schoop earned his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Cologne, Germany in 2000. Dr. Schoop has spent his career researching thin-film deposition and devices in both Germany and the U.S., with an emphasis on thin film multilayer deposition on flexible materials utilizing roll-to-roll processing.
